How a 45-question test is scored
Divide the number of correct answers by 45 and multiply by 100. With 45 questions worth the same amount, each one is 2.222% of the grade. With 45 questions each answer is worth only 2.22%, so the grade is steadier than on a short quiz. This size is typical for midterms and multi-section exams.
On the common 90/80/70/60 scale you can miss up to 4 questions for an A, up to 9 questions for a B, up to 13 questions for a C, up to 18 questions for a D. Anything below the D line is an F.
Quick reference for 45 questions
These scores come from the same chart you see in the tool above.
- 0 wrong answers (45 correct) = 100.0%, grade A
- 1 wrong answer (44 correct) = 97.8%, grade A
- 2 wrong answers (43 correct) = 95.6%, grade A
- 3 wrong answers (42 correct) = 93.3%, grade A
- 5 wrong answers (40 correct) = 88.9%, grade B
- 9 wrong answers (36 correct) = 80.0%, grade B
- 14 wrong answers (31 correct) = 68.9%, grade D
- 18 wrong answers (27 correct) = 60.0%, grade D
Rounding and partial credit on 45 questions
Because 45 does not divide 100 evenly, scores are rounded. For example, 5 wrong is 88.8889% exactly and shows as 88.9% rounded to one decimal. The letter is chosen from the rounded value that is displayed.
Half points are possible too: one half-credit answer is worth 1.111%.
Worked example: 5 wrong on a 45-question test
A student misses 5 of 45 questions.
- Correct answers
- 40 of 45
- Percentage
- 88.9%
- Standard A–F
- B
- Plus/minus
- B+
(45 − 5) ÷ 45 × 100 = 88.89%, so the grade is 88.9% (B).
