Schools differ: some value A+ at 4.33 and some use whole letters only. The A–F tab covers whole-letter schools; check your school’s scale for official transcripts.
3.70 GPA = A- on the plus / minus scale.

How GPA to letter grade conversion works
Each letter grade carries grade points: on the plus/minus scale A and A+ are 4.0, A- is 3.7, B+ is 3.3, B is 3.0 and so on down to F at 0.0. A GPA that equals one of those point values converts exactly to that letter. A GPA between two point values does not belong to either letter outright — it sits between them, which is the honest answer for an average.
Whole-letter schools are simpler: A is 4.0, B is 3.0, C is 2.0, D is 1.0 and F is 0.0, so a 3.0 GPA is a B and a 3.5 sits between B and A. Use the A–F tab in the converter for those schools.
Why a GPA rarely converts to one clean letter
A GPA averages many courses, so it lands on values like 3.42 or 3.85 that no single letter owns. That is normal, not an error: the letter on a transcript describes one course, while the GPA describes all of them. When a form asks for a letter and you only have a GPA, report the nearest letter and the GPA itself — the number carries more information than the letter.
- Exact point values (4.0, 3.7, 3.3, 3.0…) convert to one letter.
- Values between two points sit between those two letters.
- Some schools value A+ at 4.33; on the scales used here A+ is 4.0, so check your school’s scale for official use.
When a form asks for a letter and you only have a GPA
Give both: the nearest letter and the GPA itself. A form that forces one letter loses information — a 3.85 and a 3.70 are both "between A- and A" on the plus/minus scale, but they are not the same record. Where the form allows a decimal, the GPA alone is the better answer; where it allows only a letter, pick the nearest one and attach the GPA in a note or transcript if you can.
GPA scales beyond 4.0
Not every GPA lives on the 4.0 scale. Some schools value A+ at 4.33, so a straight-A record reads above 4.0. Weighted high school GPAs run on a 5.0 scale, where AP courses count as 5.0. And CGPA systems in India and elsewhere run on a 10.0 scale with their own conversion formulas per university. Never convert across scales by proportion alone — a 4.0-scale GPA, a 5.0-scale weighted GPA and a 10.0-scale CGPA are different measurements, and each needs its own converter.
Worked example: what letter is a 3.7 GPA?
A student with a 3.70 GPA asks what letter that is.
- GPA entered
- 3.70
- Plus/minus scale
- A- (3.70 points)
- A–F scale
- Between B (3.00) and A (4.00)
- Nearest whole letter
- A
On the plus/minus scale 3.70 is exactly A-. On a whole-letter scale the same GPA sits between B and A, closer to A.
