How a 35-question test is scored
Divide the number of correct answers by 35 and multiply by 100. With 35 questions worth the same amount, each one is 2.857% of the grade. With 35 questions each answer is worth only 2.86%, so the grade is steadier than on a short quiz. This size is typical for midterms and multi-section exams.
On the common 90/80/70/60 scale you can miss up to 3 questions for an A, up to 7 questions for a B, up to 10 questions for a C, up to 14 questions for a D. Anything below the D line is an F.
Quick reference for 35 questions
These scores come from the same chart you see in the tool above.
- 0 wrong answers (35 correct) = 100.0%, grade A
- 1 wrong answer (34 correct) = 97.1%, grade A
- 2 wrong answers (33 correct) = 94.3%, grade A
- 3 wrong answers (32 correct) = 91.4%, grade A
- 4 wrong answers (31 correct) = 88.6%, grade B
- 7 wrong answers (28 correct) = 80.0%, grade B
- 11 wrong answers (24 correct) = 68.6%, grade D
- 14 wrong answers (21 correct) = 60.0%, grade D
Rounding and partial credit on 35 questions
Because 35 does not divide 100 evenly, scores are rounded. For example, 4 wrong is 88.5714% exactly and shows as 88.6% rounded to one decimal. The letter is chosen from the rounded value that is displayed.
Half points are possible too: one half-credit answer is worth 1.429%.
Worked example: 4 wrong on a 35-question test
A student misses 4 of 35 questions.
- Correct answers
- 31 of 35
- Percentage
- 88.6%
- Standard A–F
- B
- Plus/minus
- B+
(35 − 4) ÷ 35 × 100 = 88.57%, so the grade is 88.6% (B).
